Reimagining the Victorians
The Statement
In our modern perception, it is possible to observe the face of the nineteenth century in both admiration and aversion. Whether in victory or condemnation, this era undoubtedly shaped today. My fascination with the period originates from a longstanding interest in its history and arts, which provides a foundation for my works. Shifted and re-coded in modernist parody, this historical material is born anew. From brush to canvas, I have endeavoured to imitate a painterly style resembling a traditional bygone era. Though copyist of these highly institutionalised artists of the period, it is upon closer inspection that my subverted intentions are apparent. Each painting is tainted by modern anachronistic detail, allowing me to critique a relevant commentary of today, to sardonic, humorous and judicious ends.
